3D PRINTED CAMERA
This is a sub-project of my work at Rye Harbour and documents the creation of an analogue 4x5 view camera printed from a digital file.
Just as the "natural" landscape is built from a plan, so is the camera that records it. The whole process is revealed as a fabrication.
Printing the parts (above left) took 125 hours, using PLA (polylactic acid), which is a plant-based biodegradable material. As production is relatively low-energy, PLA is considered reasonably environmentally-friendly if disposed of correctly.
Constructing and learning to use the camera took quite a bit of trial and error. It was some relief to finally see the first image (below left) and find it free of light leaks.
The download files and/or completed cameras can be sourced from Standard Cameras.
